Created in collaboration with @allihalla a dear friend, designer, pattern maker, and seamstress who I work with for my own custom clothing when I can’t find pieces to fit my body.
Initially we created this dress in a completely different fabric but due to the pandemic, and shipping delays there wasn’t enough stock to create the amount we needed. Alli had to go in-person to LA to source our fabric, we decided to use a combination of vintage deadstock fabrics because we wanted this dress to be one of a kind, once deadstock is gone it’s gone.
After landing on the fabric, we perfected the design and fit. We fit the dress pattern for a 5X and worked up and and down the size chart to ensure the fit worked well. The Dress comes in sizes 2X - 8X, there will only be 50 made in total. This dress was designed to be a fat-exclusive, is made to be slightly oversized, can be dressed up or down, and has pockets. All dresses are hand made by Alli, in Portland Oregon.
The Creative Team
To showcase The Dress I worked with a cast of brilliant stylists, creators, photographer, models, and production folks to help tell this story. Michele Lepe was once again our brilliant photographer, making all of our photography visioning dreams come to life! Kanda Mbenza-Ngoma was amazing in both planning and on set working to create an experience for the models and cast day of. Kanda was core in the concepting of this visual story, while also helping to guide and work with me in preparation. Kanda wore many hats all while being our model doula. Coco Madrid helped us in concepting the vision both in styling and location. Correia Rouse was our incredible makeup and hair artist. Mallori Marks-McNally was our support and assistance on set. And of course Titus collaborated with me on set, and worked to gather behind the scenes footage to tell a full story. Titus also helped make our production come to life with motion to share with the world.
The Models
This dress was a dream to create, I wanted to work with Models who I love to create with and are part of my local Fat Community. Ruby Nelson is an amazing model based out of the Seattle Area, we had the pleasure of walking in a fashion show together and I couldn’t understand how a person could be so kind and genuinely curious about others. Ruby is a true angel! Shawna Farmer has been part of the fat fashion scene for years and was the founder of Chubby Cartwheels, a brand most of us fatties got our first properly fitting baby doll dress from! Stephanie Griffin the founder of Siren Song Stitchery, and a beautiful human through and through. Fun fact about Stephanie, she is an amazing commercial actress. MaryAnn Escutia is one of my dearest friends, and my partner in fat fashion endeavors. MaryAnn is not only beautiful but also has a fashion production and marketing background that makes collaboration super lovely.
